5 Ways the Met Gala Could Have Done Better: May 22, 2024

Hook, line, and sinker.

Welcome to the twenty-eighth edition of Cross Couture, the fashion x history x economics x culture newsletter.

It’s Day 25 of my Spring Challenge!

As a reminder, this challenge means that either you get an email in your inbox 5 times per week until May 31st (which means I get a set of luxurious, vintage jammies) OR I have to donate $5 to a charity I hate for every week that I miss the goal.

Series #4: 5 Ways the Met Gala Could Have Done Better

Today’s Pick: Fish Scales

I absolutely love this creation. Designer brand Jenn Lee has created bodycon tops using something super locally available AND reducing the waste it carries: milkfish.

Milkfish is harvested and eaten in Southeast Asia, as well as some Pacific Islands. However, very obviously, the scales are discarded.

Designer Wei Chen Lee is using what’s readily available to her (isn’t that what fashion should be about?): those scales. Blended with biodegradable rayon fiber, Lee created brand new designs centered around, “rebirth and karma”, in her words.

Again, what a great way to celebrate local nature and the cycle of time! Come on, Met Gala!!

Katie Robinson also had some great tweets and examples of how the Met Gala could have done better in highlighting sustainability. Head on over to check out her work!

(funnily enough, we both covered Sonnet155 - love it!)
