Top 5 Fashion Reads: April 29, 2024

Where there is a will...

Welcome to the tenth edition of Cross Couture, the fashion x culture newsletter.

The clothes we wear have always been an ever-shifting portrait of society and we’re sitting down to explore how our daily outfits change as we come into contact with new societies, technologies, and stories.

It’s Day 8 of my Spring Challenge!

As a reminder, this challenge means that either you get an email in your inbox 5 times per week until May 31st (which means I get a set of luxurious, vintage jammies) OR I have to donate $5 to a charity I hate for every week that I miss the goal.

Series #2: Top 5 Fashion Reads for the Cross Couturist.

Dior, Chanel, Anna Wintour and McQueen are awesome. But I want to explore some of the other fashion legends out there - so let’s chat about them.

This one is a bit of a cheat, because it doesn’t explore just ONE story, it explores at least 20.

Starting in 1830 and heading into 2020, Way’s work tells us about the people we never hear about who redefined clothes for us, from materials to streetwear.

Way covers a wide range of creators, including designers who dressed Presidents and First Ladies, couturiers who brought the 1960s into the 1970s (sometimes before the world was even ready!), and designers who turn painful African-American history on its head with newer interpretations of traditional materials.

Paris, New York, London, Milan have all been built into the world’s fashion capitals through the work of Black, Latinx, and Asian designers - and it’s time we start hearing about them.
