Top 5 South Asian Brands: April 22, 2024.
Ice, ice, baby.
Welcome to the fifth edition of Cross Couture, the fashion x culture newsletter. |
The clothes we wear have always been an ever-shifting portrait of society and we’re sitting down to explore how our daily outfits change as we come into contact with new societies, technologies, and stories. |
It’s Day 3 of my Spring Challenge!
As a reminder, this challenge means that either you get an email in your inbox 5 times per week until May 31st (which means I get a set of luxurious, vintage jammies) OR I have to donate $5 to a charity I hate for every week that I miss the goal.
Series #1: Top 5 South Asian Brands I’ve Discovered in 2024.
Today’s pick: November 28

Ice Blue Satin Crop Top with Hand Embroidered Stars
Okay, so super bluntly: this isn’t something I’m likely to wear. Ice blue isn’t my color, I don’t love patterns, and I’m a huge fan of ~structure~.
But I can’t deny that this outfit is FUN! The stars aren’t on there to remind us of the great vastness and mystery of the universe, they’re just big and silver. The high, straight-across neckline isn’t trying to emphasize the bust, it’s just a cute neckline. In fact, this shirt looks like it will fall straight, in a very flapperish style.
Overall, this outfit is very early-2000s, going-to-the-mall-with-your-friends kitschy, which is great because if there’s one thing the early 2000s could do with their fashion, it was have fun.
